  • NORA Member Vertex Energy To Potentially Acquire NORA Member Heartland Group

    NORA member Vertex Energy, Inc. announced that it has begun due diligence of NORA member Heartland Group Holdings LLC under the terms of a letter of intent which contemplates Vertex acquiring substantially all of the assets of Heartland Group for approximately $16.5 million, which includes an approximate $8 million dollar earnout achievable during the first 2 years.  To read more on this story, click here.

    NORA Making Major Strides in its PCB/TSCA Reform Efforts

    Over the last 18 months, NORA has made major strides in its lobbying efforts to modify the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and the associated regulations and guidance to assure that there are more environmentally sound, but economically feasible options for addressing PCB contaminated used oil.  NORA has submitted two Proposal Documents to the EPA.

    NORA's two proposals, if adopted, will dramatically reduce the liability and expense associated with a "PCB hit."  An update on our progress will be made at the NORA Conference.  Donations to the NORA Defense Fund are being sought to allow this effort to continue.

    Hydrodec Group to File for Provisional Patent

    Hydrodec Group, a NORA member since 2012, has filed a Provisional Patent application to protect a method for hydrogenation refining of used oil and otherwise contaminated oil, to produce a high quality refined base oil product.  This patent particularly applies to the re-refining of used oils.  For the full article, click here.

    NORA Announces Commander Kirk Lippold, USN (Ret.) as Keynote Speaker at 2014 Conference and Trade Show

    NORA has announced that Commander Kirk Lippold, USN (Ret.) will speak at the 2014 NORA Annual Conference and Trade Show in Puerto Rico on Thursday, November 6 at 9 a.m. Lippold was the Commanding Officer of the USS Cole when it came under a suicide terrorist attack by al Qaeda in the port of Aden, Yemen. With this unique experience, Lippold will address the audience on “Leadership and Accountability When It Matters.”  To read more, click here.

    US Ecology, Inc. Completes Acquisition of The Environmental Quality Company

    US Ecology, Inc. announced the completion of its previously announced acquisition of The Environmental Quality Company, for $465 million.  The company also announced that David M. Luck, formerly President and CEO of EQ, was appointed to the Board of Directors of US Ecology.  In addition, Mario Romero, Vice President of Operations of EQ, was named US Ecology’s Executive Vice President of Field and Industrial Services.  To read more, click here.

    3 1/2 Year Prison Sentence for Owner of NC Company for Unlawful Handling of PCB Used Oil

    Benjamin Pass was sentenced to three and a half years in federal prison related to a 2009 incident involving the unlawful handling of PCB contaminated used oil.  He was also ordered to pay $22 million in restitution.  Pass was the president of P&W Waste Oil Services (a non-NORA member).  Click here for full details.

    House and Senate Working to Pass a Highway Funding Bill Ahead of August 1 Deadline

    The House and Senate are working on reconciling competing versions of bills that would continue funding the Highway Trust Fund.  If no bill is passed, the Department of Transportation would begin delaying payments to the states on August 1st.  It is widely expected that Congress will pass a short term bill ahead of their adjourning for the summer later this week.  Click here for more information.

    Rebuttable Presumption FAQs Now Available for Members

    NORA General Counsel Chris Harris has prepared a five page document of Questions and Answers on How to Rebut the Rebuttable Presumption.  Every company that collects and/or processes used oil should read this document and be familiar with how to rebut the presumption.  As Harris stated, "If you cannot, you will have a ton of hazardous waste on your hands."  Click here to open the FAQs.

    NORA Member Puralube Considering Upgrading Re-refinery to Group III

    According to recent media reports, NORA Member Puralube is considering expanding one of its German re-refineries or upgrading it to be able to produce Group III base oil.  Puralube Managing Director Christian Hartmann stated, "We are more likely to upgrade to Group III."  Click here to read more.

    EPA Tweets About Kardashian App

    On July 21, an EPA employee using an official EPA twitter account sent a tweet about the reality star Kim Kardashian gaming app.  It stated, "I'm now a C-List celebrity in Kim Kardashian:  Hollywood.  Come join me and become famous too by playing on the iPhone."  The employee has been "advised on the sensitivities of using social media."  Click here to read more.
