To better answer people's questions about how to learn GIS, the MN GIS/LIS Consortium commissioned a survey of educational opportunities in and near Minnesota. The survey was designed to answer questions of how to learn more about GIS/LIS within the framework of college and university courses. The survey does not address day-long and week-long seminars offered by either private vendors or institutions of higher education. Program directors were asked questions about the overall program (e.g. how many courses are offered, how often, what degrees are given, a description of facilities, and who to contact for more information). Course instructors were asked questions about each course (e.g. level of difficulty, prerequisites, course descriptions, lab activities, hardware and software, and toward what degree the course counts). Programs are summarized by the number of courses offered, level of degree program, GIS software, and types of courses (e.g. GIS, cartography, CAD, GPS, surveying, and remote sensing). HOW TO GET THIS PUBLICATION This publication is available in three formats: 1. ftp/www Ftp and www sites change often, so these instructions may change too. Ftp to ftp.lmic.state.mn.us, login with anonymous, use email address for a password, cd pub, cd gislis, type binary, get gised.wp5, bye. This will give you the document in Word Perfect 5.1 format. Or get gised.txt for ASCII text version. For www, browse the home page (http://www.lmic.state.mn.us) of the Land Management Information Center (LMIC) and look for MN GIS/LIS Consortium. Request the document from a subheading that refers to the GIS educational survey. 2. 3 and 1/2" disk In Word Perfect 5.1 format. TABLE I: Institutions, and number of courses. Twenty academic departments in institutions of higher education offer courses in GIS-related subjects. Nineteen responded to this survey. (The missing institution was the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse). In terms of the number of GIS-related courses, institutions fall into three groups. In the first group are six schools that offer a significant GIS curriculum of five or more courses: Alexandria Technical Institute, Bemidji State University, St. Cloud State, St. Mary's University, the University of Minnesota Mpls & St. Paul campuses taken together, and the University of North Dakota. A second group is the several institutions that offer about three courses, and a third group is schools that offer a single course.
