Eric G. MaddenDear Members:

This month has brought much activity to ACEC/PA.  Let’s start from the beginning.

The 2012 ACEC/PA Diamond Awards Gala was a huge success.  Our attendance was the most ever with 310 registered guests.  Congratulations to our many Award Winners and to our Distinguished Award of Merit Honoree, Kenneth R. Nadler, P.E. from Mackin Engineering.  His long and tireless efforts to move our industry forward is a great source of pride for us all.

Kenneth R. Nadler is recognized as the Distinguished Award of Merit Honoree at the 2012 ACEC/PA Diamond Awards Gala.

Visit the Awards Committee page on the ACEC/PA website to view all the winners and view the photos from the event.  Also, a hearty thank you goes out to all the volunteers who make this event our premier night of the year.

The following week, we were all waiting to hear what remarks Governor Tom Corbett was going to make in his Annual Budget Address before the General Assembly.  For those of you that missed it, here is what he said:

Lastly, it is also critical that we address our transportation issues. This is not a budget item. It is too large for that. Transportation must be confronted as its own distinct and separate topic. This problem has grown for the past several decades and it will not be solved overnight. But, whatever solution we enact must be a lasting one.

I have spent significant time considering this issue with my transportation team and developed some workable solutions. However, those solutions will only be possible with your input, assistance and support. I look forward to working with you.

While he did mention transportation funding, his remarks stopped short of endorsing the recommendations of the Transportation Funding Advisory Commission or offering his own plan to move the issue forward.  ACEC/PA will continue to work with the Keystone Transportation Funding Coalition and the General Assembly to keep this issue in the forefront of things to address in 2012.

This month, we also heard from State House Chairman of the Transportation Committee, Representative Richard A. Geist (R-Blair) at our Government Affairs Breakfast.  The Chairman shared his thoughts on the Governor’s Budget Address and spoke of his efforts to move his Public/Private Partnerships bill through the House.  His bill, House Bill 3, is soon up for a final vote on the House Floor.  If successful, it will move to the Senate for consideration. Join us next month on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 when our speaker will be U.S. Congressman and Transportation and Infrastructure Committee member, Bill Shuster (R-9).  This will be an ACEC/PA member-only event and seating will be limited.  Be sure to register early. Speaking of Congressman Shuster, ACEC PAC will be hosting a fundraiser for the Congressman on the evening of Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at 6:00 PM at the Hershey Lodge.  View the announcement here.  All proceeds will go toward the “Bill Shuster for Congress” campaign.

2012 has not slowed down one bit as we begin to enter its third month.  Stay informed by visiting the ACEC/PA website and review the Latest News.  Speaking of the website, it has been up for two months and I would love to know what you think about your new tool.  Click here to provide us with feedback.

I look forward to seeing you all in March.

ACEC President David Raymond's Monthly Update

Dear Colleagues:

We’re off to a fast start this year with the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee releasing its five-year surface transportation bill today; I just returned from Committee Chairman Mica’s press conference on Capitol Hill, and he recognized ACEC for our leadership on moving this bill forward.  Among many provisions, the bill includes, at ACEC’s initiative, strong language to make sure that state DOTs contract out to the private sector.  Full coverage of the bill will appear in Last Word on Thursday.  Considering that infrastructure was highlighted in the President’s State of the Union, and that the Senate has companion legislation moving this week as well, I think that infrastructure offers one of few important legislative areas where we see realistic prospects for passage this year.
