The Certified Internal Auditor (CIA®) is the only globally recognized internal audit certification. Not only does the CIA demonstrate your credibility as an internal audit professional, it also gives you a competitive edge over your peers. IIA South Africa historically has regarded the CIA as a crucial element of the value proposition to IIA members in South Africa, and this holds true today. To earn the CIA designation, candidates must meet eligibility requirements in the following four areas:

• Academic qualification – Generally a bachelor’s degree or equivalent is                 required   as a minimum for The IIA’s certification programs. However, if you do       not meet the minimum education requirements, The IIA offers an alternate               pathway for experienced internal auditors to become eligible for certification             programs.

• Ethics – Candidates must exhibit high moral and professional character, maintain   exam confidentiality, and agree to abide by The IIA’s Code of Ethics. A Character   Reference Form is required during the application.

• Examinations – Candidates must pass all three CIA exam parts, which cover the   knowledge, skills, and abilities required of today’s internal auditors. For details         regarding the topic areas covered on the exams, please refer to the exam syllabi.

• Experience – The experience requirement depends on the candidate’s level of                               education:

o Master’s degree or equivalent: 12 months of internal audit                                         experience or its equivalent.

o Bachelor's degree (including Honours degree) or equivalent: 24                               months of internal audit experience or its equivalent.

o Associate degree or equivalent: 60 months of internal audit                                       experience or its equivalent.

o Grade twelve certificate or equivalent: 72 months of internal audit                              experience or its equivalent.

To maintain the CIA certification, candidates must continue to exhibit high moral and professional character and abide by The IIA’s Code of Ethics, and they must obtain and report the required continuing professional education (CPE) annually.

Please visit the CIA certification webpage for more information.

These requirements are established by The IIA’s Professional Certifications Board and are applicable in all countries around the world. The Internal Audit Technician (IAT) and the Professional Internal Auditor (PIA) programs offered by IIA South Africa are NOT part of requirements for the CIA certification. Candidates can choose their own path to prepare for the CIA exam, including (but not limited to) training programs provided by IIA South Africa, CIA Learning System, self-study, etc.
