Digitization tools for GIS Editor

Spatial database plays key role in GIS applications. The creation of spatial database can be done by processing the satellite images or from the digitization of the hard copy. Usually the spatial data is of thousands of tera bytes and handling this huge amount of data would be a daunting task. For example, the problem (due to enormous size) can arise in the retrieval of data during query processing. Therefore, to implement the GIS editor various issues have to be taken care of (particularly of efficient storage of spatial data). In this paper an image processing technique is proposed to make the storage of spatial data (from images, maps) efficient. The idea is to apply curve-fitting techniques to store the boundaries of the regions. This representation is application-specific. Data storage will be more efficient if accuracy can be compromised. The front-end interface of the GIS Editor is implemented in Java.
