Congratulations, America, on Marriage Equality!

Happy 4th of July!

NASW Applauds the U.S. Supreme Court Same-Sex Marriage Ruling

"Americans should be very proud," because small acts of courage "slowly made an entire country realize that love is love."
President Barack Obama

"Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization's oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right."
Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Earned Income Tax Credit Expanded

On Monday, the New State Legislature voted to expand the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) that helps many low-wage residents in New Jersey. The Earned Income Tax Credit program will get a boost of $120 million for the state, helping about 500,000 New Jerseyans. This is great news as the tax credit has been cut in prior budget years, hurting our state's working poor.

The State Legislature, in an agreement with Governor Christie, approved an increase in the EITC from 20% to 30% of the federal EITC rate. This will give New Jersey families who benefit from the EITC an average of $250 extra per year. Most of the families who receive this tax credit earn $20,000/year or less. With this change their take home pay can increase up to $600/year .

To qualify, a single person without children cannot earn more than $14,820; the limit for a married couple filing jointly with three children is $53,267, according to 2015 IRS data.
We applaud Governor Christie, the Senate, and Assembly for taking this step that helps the economy and New Jersey's working families.
