Exclusive Q&A with Industry Expert Jeffrey Hayzlett


The cover story of the January 2014 issue of Print Solutions magazine included eight powerful voices speaking on the state of the industry. One of those voices, Jeffrey Hayzlett, CEO of The Hayzlett Group and host of the Bloomberg TV show “C-Suite with Jeffrey Hayzlett,” answered a few additional questions of ours that we couldn't fit into the magazine.

Q: The last few years seem like they’ve been a whirlwind for you. You’ve written two books, worked with Donald Trump on “Celebrity Apprentice,” and now have your own show on Bloomberg TV. From a business perspective, what do you get satisfaction from doing? What keeps you energized?

A: Three things, mainly. One, I like to build wealth, because I think that’s what we’re here for, and I’m proud to be part of a free enterprise system that allows us to do that. Most leaders want to be comfortable — to have the things we like to have in the way that we want to have them. The second is to have fun. If I’m not having fun, why would I want to do it? Third, I love learning new things. That’s a big portion of what I’m always doing — working with new clients and projects, and constantly trying to figure out how to make things work better. That’s probably true even when it’s none of my business.

Q: One thing I’ve noticed is that you seem to be extremely interested in how companies sound, not just what they sell. You tend to emphasize the need for businesses to act and speak in a genuine way, rather than sounding corporate and stuffy. Can you talk about that?

A: Well, part of my own brand is I can’t be anybody but me. It’s so much easier to be yourself. And when I’m working with companies, we all have to realize that sometimes we don’t look in the mirror. People at Kodak used to come up to me and say, “Make us like we used to be!” I couldn’t understand why. Do we really want to look the way we did when we were 20? It might seem like a good idea — maybe we looked great then — but today we can look even better. It’s an attitude to be who you are and what you are, for people as well as companies.

Q: On your TV show, you try to get at the heart of what business leaders are going through at large companies. Each firm you feature is dealing with distinct issues, but what challenges seem to be common across all firms, from big ones like Dunkin’ Donuts to smaller ones like most print distributors?

A: Let’s start with the notion that every business likes to think it’s different. By and large, that’s not true. You can make an experience special, and you can develop close partnerships and business relationships, but by and large, processes are extremely similar from company to company. Two common problems come to mind across the board. One is focus. Business leaders struggle to focus clearly on differentiation, and on what specific promises they’re going to deliver. I don’t think we focus enough on questions like, “What are the five things we’re really going to drive?” Second, I don’t think we listen well in general. Many leaders have a tough time with that. We get into a story about what we think something is, rather than just sitting back and understanding what the customer is trying to tell us. A good leader needs to listen because there’s truth in the old saying, “There’s a pony in there somewhere.” There’s no value in essentially saying, “Here! This is it!” There’s more value in realizing that you don’t know what you don’t know. When you take time to listen, you can quickly figure out what you don’t know.

SAGE Conference Breaks Attendee Record

A record-breaking crowd of more than 700 distributors and suppliers joined together for this year's annual SAGE Conference during the PPAI Expo in Las Vegas, representing almost 30 percent more attendees than the 2013 conference. Current and prospective SAGE customers came from across the nation to attend SAGE Conference 2014.

“We are so appreciative of the continued support that PSDA member SAGE has received from the industry over the years and this year's event has surpassed our expectations with a tremendous increase in attendance,” said David Natinsky, president of SAGE. “Thank you to everyone who attended, and we hope the education sessions and personal trainings were very beneficial to you and your company's growth for the upcoming year.”
USPS Raises Stamp Prices

On Jan. 26, the U.S. Postal Service raised the price of a first class stamp to 49 cents. This marked the biggest price jump in a decade.

The USPS noted that it was a last resort, but a necessary one because of the need to close a budget gap of 20 million dollars. “The Postal Service is not tax supported,” explained Richard Watkins, a USPS spokesperson, “We rely solely on the sale of postage and other services to maintain our delivery network.”

Adobe Photoshop CC Update Adds 3-D Printing Capabilities

Adobe recently unveiled new 3-D printing capabilities in Adobe Photoshop CC. The software, which is available now, simplifies the 3-D print process and enables Creative Cloud members to easily build, refine, preview, prepare and print 3-D designs.

“The new 3-D print capabilities in Photoshop CC take the guess work out of printing 3-D models for everyone,” said Winston Hendrickson, vice president of products for Adobe’s Creative Media Solutions. “Before [now], there was a gap between the content produced by 3-D modeling tools and what 3-D printers need in order to deliver high quality results. Now, by simply clicking ‘Print’ in Photoshop CC, creatives can bring 3-D designs to the physical world.”
Chinese Chemists Create Printer that Uses Water Instead of Ink

A team of chemists from China has created a machine that prints using water. Their “water-jet” technology allows pages to be printed and the reprinted many times. How does it work? An invisible dye, when exposed to water, turns color then disappears after about 22 hours as the water evaporates.
