PSDA’s HR Corner: Expert Advice on Employee Sick Days

Q: A few of my employees have shown up sick for work. I really appreciate their dedication, but I'd rather they not come to work sick and get the rest of us sick. Can I send them home and require that they use their sick leave?

A: Yes, you can. Recognize that there may be reasons why employees are showing up sick that might include: not wanting to use sick or paid-time-off leave; not being able to afford the lost wages due to illness; fear that the workload will become overwhelming if work is missed; or fear of disappointing the boss.

If you do send them home, reassure them that you want them to take the time to recover and that you will help to ensure their work gets done. Remind them that sick leave is offered so they will stay home when they are sick. And if they are worried about lost wages, try to identify ways for them to make up the time once they return to health.

American Solutions for Business Names Automotive Sales Director

PSDA member American Solutions for Business (ASB) of Glenwood, Minn., recently promoted JP Shea to North American director of automotive sales. Prior to his 19 years in sales and recruiting at ASB, Shea spent 20 years in the automotive industry and has experience in sales, marketing and advertising.

“Our goal is to be the best option for dealerships throughout the country,” Shea said. “American associates have made a positive difference for dealerships because we can offer a great platform of products and services. Every day we strive to be the best customer-driven automotive solution in the industry.”

In his new role, Shea will work with Jason Gange, an automotive specialist who has been with the company for 13 years. The picture on the right is of Shea, left, and Gange. The two will collaborate with a 12-member national sales team, formed to focus on communication and direction.

“We've always had a large number of sales associates who focus on sales to the automotive industry,” said Justin Zavadil, vice president of sales. “With our recent growth in this market, we see huge potential, and we're pleased to have JP and Jason here to strengthen our dedication to serve dealerships across the country.”

Formax Adds FD 87HD Hard Drive Punch to its Shredder Line

PSDA member Formax recently introduced the latest addition to its commercial-grade shredder line: the FD 87HD Hard Drive Punch. With the push of a button, the hardened nickel-plated steel punching die pierces a hole through hard drive internals, causing visible damage and making the stored data virtually unreadable.

The FD 87HD is designed to handle the two most common hard drive sizes, 2.5” and 3.5”, without any additional adjustment. Its punching chamber is illuminated by LEDs during the punching process, visible through the transparent safety shield. Punched hard drives then slide into a convenient waste bin for storage until disposal or recycling.

The Formax LED control panel displays the status and offers jam protection with auto reverse and automatic stop to protect the punching die. In addition, sensors stop the motor automatically if the door is open or waste bin is full. The powerful geared motor is housed in an all-metal cabinet with casters for mobility and is designed for low operational noise.

The FD 87HD Hard Drive Punch expands the Formax data destruction line, and is an ideal solution for keeping sensitive digital data out of the wrong hands.
Magnum Magnetics Announces New Printable, Magnetic Material for Wide Format

Magnum Magnetics Corporation recently announced the impending rollout of its newest product, DigiMaxx, its first printable, flexible magnetic material designed for super-wide-format printing applications (above 40”).

Prior to Magnum's announcement, printers of magnetic signage and graphics looking to fill wide-format needs had been forced to import material from overseas because no domestic manufacturer of printable magnets could accommodate widths of 40” or higher. Some customers reported that some of the foreign material suffered from quality issues and long delivery times.

“Our magnet is made in the USA,” said Magnum Magnetics President Mark Bradley. “Therefore, Magnum is able to offer better lead times, outstanding customer service and innovative, high quality products.”

DigiMaxx runs on many commercial wide-format UV flatbed or inkjet presses, much like paper stock. Its standard thickness is 20mil (0.50mm) and 30mil (0.76mm), but can be custom-ordered to different thicknesses. Magnum can also customize roll lengths and widths, laminates and adhesive backings for specific customer needs.
AmeriLam Supply Group Introduces Luxe FineLinen Laminate Film

AmeriLam Supply Group will soon launch a new product, Luxe® FineLinen™ laminate film, a special 24 micron polypropylene material. Manufactured with a unique emboss pattern imbedded in the film, FineLinen simulates the texture of high-quality European linen. The tight, close grain pattern gives a luxurious, matte finish.

As a thermal laminating film product, FineLinen film is easily applied utilizing standard one-sided laminating equipment. The film has a very strong surface structure and can be foil-stamped, vanished, glued or embossed.

“This product has created unprecedented excitement,” said Steve Truan, AmeriLam Supply Group partner. “It provides an incredible finish on nearly any type of book cover, folding carton, or printed piece — easily and quickly with thermal application.”

The product release is scheduled for April 1.
