PSDA’s HR Corner: Expert Advice on Health Insurance

Q: We have 24 employees, and our health insurance is expensive. One of our employees has decided to enroll in the local health exchange because it is less expensive for her. She's now asking for us to pay her the amount we would have paid for her health insurance. Do we have to do that?

A: No. Not only do you not have to do it, we recommend that you don't do it. As a small business (fewer than 50 employees), you are under no obligation to provide health insurance or to pay your employees to obtain it on their own. Clearly, small group plans can be expensive, and your employees may prefer the exchange. But paying her sets a precedent. Would you do this for all your employees? How much will you pay them? For how long? The good news is that she now has a choice in health coverage — a choice that should not become a financial and administrative burden to you.

Case Study: Diving into Digital

The February issue of Print Solutions magazine features a case study on a label company that completed a complex order thanks to its new digital press. Read below for an excerpt:

"Ralph Lauren, the high-end clothing retailer, needed color-coordinated, barcoded labels for its warehouse racks. When workers in the distribution facility put items on the metal racks for storage or pull them for shipment to customers, they scan the barcoded labels to track inventory.

The project presented several challenges. The manufacturer printed 150,000 total labels with five different color backgrounds corresponding to a rack location. Each label also included a sequential Code 39 barcode and the equivalent human-readable number. The colored labels were then placed on rolls of 1,500 and shipped to Ralph Lauren.

The project presented several challenges. First, the clothing retailer didn't give any artwork to the distributor. The only instructions were to provide 3 1/4 x 1 1/2-inch labels in five colors: red, blue, orange, green and yellow — in that order, then repeated over and over. Ralph Lauren also sent an Excel spreadsheet listing the variable data that had to appear on each label. 'There was a pattern,' Perrill said. 'The last number indicated what color label that particular information should be placed on.'

That presented the second challenge: How should Matrix Label set up the data in the digital press so the barcodes would run consecutively and on the right background color? Employees at Ralph Lauren planned to go row-to-row in the warehouse, applying labels on the bottom rack, then working to the top. It was imperative that the labels come off the rolls correctly, finished and perfed with no missing labels or splices."

American Solutions for Business Names New Members of Recruitment/Retention Team

Amy Lamb, who has been with PSDA member American Solutions for Business for 16 years, was recently named director of sales recruitment and retention. Lamb has held positions in human resources, sales and most recently as a recruiting specialist. In her new position, she will work to further develop and grow ASB's recruiting process and will be assisted by a six-member home office sales support team.

Also joining the team is Kim Hoffmann who has 11 years of expertise in the human resource industry and will be specializing in the onboarding of new sales associates. Hoffmann has been with ASB for five years.

"As part of our continuing expansion, this reorganization will further position us to improve and extend our national footprint," said Justin Zavadil, ASB's VP of sales.

"Because of our significant investment in technology, ASB is able to support rapid growth. We are aggressively approaching the marketplace looking for sales associates who wish to control their destiny and distributorship owners wishing to sell, transition or grow their business."
FormStore Celebrates 35 Year Anniversary

PSDA member FormStore recently celebrated its 35th anniversary. For 35 years, FormStore has been manufacturing membership ID cards — to date, almost 2 billion have been produced! And, for more than 10 years, it's been one of the largest digital print mail centers in the Midwest. The company houses both Kodak NexPress and Xerox iGen digital color presses with the ability to print full-color and high-quality work independent of print run length.
Two Sides Releases U.S. Progress Report on Efforts to Promote Industry Sustainability

PSDA partner Two Sides, an initiative that was created to promote the sustainability of the Graphic Communications Industry and to dispel common environmental misconceptions by providing users with verifiable information on why print on paper is an attractive, practical and sustainable communications medium, recently released its "U.S. Progress Report for January-December 2013."

Following an introduction note from Bill Koehn, chairman of the board, and Phil Riebel, president, the report reveals some interesting results from its "Paperless Claims Initiative."

4over Holds Successful Open House at New Florida Facility

Highlighting the company's commitment to its customers, North America's largest trade printer, 4over Inc., revealed a new 73,500-square-foot Miami facility on Feb. 25. The new space is nearly double the size of the original, leading to steady job creation with seven figures in new capital investment. The attendance at the open house was high, and the response to the new facility was extremely positive.

Guests entered down a red carpet that extended from the entrance all the way back to the press room where equipment was on display, including a brand new, top-of-the-line press. Food and refreshments were served while guests had the opportunity to connect, one-on-one, with 4over Miami representatives in addition to executives from the California corporate office.

"We're dedicated to growing print markets at the local level," said Zarik Megerdichian, CEO of 4over. "We're grateful for the continued loyalty from Miami, which has allowed us to double the size of our operations and, in turn, help the local community."
