PEAK Awards Call for Entries Now Open

Held in partnership with the Print Education & Research Foundation (PERF), the PEAK Awards recognize industry firms that innovate and help customers grow. Since 1995, the program has awarded teams that make bold decisions, connect with customers in new ways and deliver benefits to end users. The PEAK categories appear in a drop-down menu on the online entry form.

Why enter? You're energized by the idea of making a difference to customers. Your company has earned recognition. You're proud of how the team performed when a client was counting on you. Your people now deserve appreciation. You can think of moments when you truly mattered to customers. You have a few great stories to tell. They exemplify what kind of company you are, what kind of people you have and what steps you've all taken to advance.

Submit your best work for consideration today. The deadline is 5 p.m. on Friday, June 20.

Register for PSDA's Young Innovators Conference in Denver

If you believe in the power of using new technology, capitalizing on new trends and sharing ideas with infectious people, there's an energizing new event for you — the first-ever PSDA Young Innovators Conference, to be held June 5-6 at the Hyatt Regency Denver in Denver, Colo. As proof of how the industry's young energy can make a difference, the event itself quickly moved from a concept to a calendar item.

The PSDA Young Innovators Conference is a groundswell effort led by Sarah Scudder, a partner and the chief growth officer at distributor The Sourcing Group, and Gordon Klepec, vice president of sales and marketing at Wright Business Graphics — the Portland, Ore.-based print communications company sponsoring the event.

Scudder says the conference will focus on two simple but important objectives: 1) Develop strategies to recruit, hire and retain youth, and 2) Discuss ways to remain relevant by innovating through the use of technology. It will include short keynotes, panel discussions, breakout sessions, a networking dinner in downtown Denver and more.

The target audience is owners and employees of distributors and manufacturers under the age of 50 who would like to learn ways to innovate, attract youth and incorporate new ways of thinking into their businesses.

More Reasons to Go to the Distributor Solutions Expo

A trade show's value equals the amount of practical tips, informative news and insightful perspective attendees apply when they return to their offices. PSDA's event this year, the 2014 Distributor Solutions Expo, will be held April 23-24 in downtown Chicago, and it's a can't-miss move for any distributor, manufacturer or supplier who counts on new ideas — and one another — to deliver powerful solutions to end users.

The experience below of Bill Lampe, owner of St. Louis-based Lampe Graphics LLC, is a great example of the type of value you can expect.

WHY DID HE GO? Lampe wanted to hear sales-growth tips from educational sessions.

WHAT VALUE DID HE GAIN? "Last year, I was surprised at how cutting edge the information sessions were. The ones I attended discussed things that many of us have not even begun to sell or implement. Every year, the benefit of walking the expo floor and sharing ideas with my fellow attendees is like talking to an adviser who really knows my business — for free!"

Hagg Press

Tell us a little about your company.
Hagg Press was founded in 1975 by brothers, Steve and Kern. The small “insty-print” firm grew throughout the 1980s and 1990s at a rate of almost 30 percent annually. The requisition of new printing and finishing technologies invited full-color printing as well as an array of publication work including magazines, catalogues, price lists and the like. Today, we serve over 550 wholesale customers who distribute our printed products broadly over the Midwestern region.

What is your company most proud of?
We are most proud of our reputation. In all areas of business, we treat employees, customers and vendors with honesty, grateful appreciation and the fullest measures of respect they deserve.

What are you most looking forward to at the 2014 Distributor Solutions Expo?
As the primary thrust of our business is wholesale trade, we, by definition, do not have salesmen beating the sidewalks. This is the providence of our customers. We are most anxious to use our opportunity to meet new customers with whom we have never done business and whom may be unfamiliar with Hagg Press. We believe that such meetings could be “win-win” for all concerned.

PSDA member Glatfelter recently joined PSDA partner Two Sides, an independent nonprofit organization established to promote the responsible production, use, and sustainability of print and paper. Two Sides' stated mission is to help people gain a better understanding of why print and paper are versatile and sustainable communication mediums.

With an international network that spans 12 countries and over 1,000 members, Two Sides continues to educate consumers regarding the recyclable and renewable qualities of print and paper products, which can be enjoyed for generations. Two Sides is providing nationwide education through its 2012 Paperless Claims Initiative to correct misleading environmental statements about print and paper.

“We join with Two Sides in the effort to educate the public about the true sustainability of paper,” said Brian Janki, vice president and general manager of Glatfelter's Specialty Papers Business Unit. “Their work aligns with our core values and Glatfelter's 150-year history of sustainability. We believe that in an era where digital media is a leading platform of communication, it's more important than ever to demonstrate the value of paper and print. We need to continue to educate the consumer on paper's relevance, its ability to bring high return on investment to many ad campaigns, and the fact that it is a sustainable and renewable resource.”

Xeikon Secures World's First Order for Digital Press with Trillium-Based Liquid Toner Technology

PSDA member Xeikon, an innovator in digital printing technology, recently announced that TagG Informatique, a Xeikon customer for about 15 years, will be the first printer worldwide to install Xeikon's new digital printing press using its high-quality Trillium liquid toner printing technology. The French company has been in business for more than two decades and produces direct mail, promotional material, financial and other documents for large corporate clients. The company has a diverse production platform with specialized equipment dedicated to producing various applications, making it the ideal field test site for Xeikon's Trillium-based press.

"I had the pleasure of seeing Trillium first-hand last year during Xeikon's customer engagement process, and I was really impressed with what I saw," said Hervé Lesseur, managing director of TagG Informatique. "I'm convinced that Xeikon Trillium will be a game-changer for the printing market, so I signed up right away for early installation of the new press. I am thrilled to be selected as the first printer worldwide to work with the new technology. Trillium is the perfect combination of cost, speed and high quality,” he said.

Wim Maes, CEO of Xeikon, added, “We are extremely pleased to be working with TagG Informatique on the first Trillium field test. This innovative customer, who wants to leverage this breakthrough technology to compete even more effectively on quality, has the right mix of applications as well as extensive experience in digital printing. This fits perfectly in our strategy for Trillium and will ensure a well-rounded field test. We are looking forward to getting their valuable feedback about press performance to help us improve the technology even more as we prepare it for commercial availability.”
