Technology. Innovation. The Next Generation.

If you believe in the power of using new technology, capitalizing on new trends and sharing ideas with infectious people, there's an energizing new event for you: the first-ever PSDA Young Innovators Conference, to be held June 5-6 at the Hyatt Regency Denver.

The conference is a groundswell effort led by Sarah Scudder, a partner and the chief growth officer at distributor The Sourcing Group, and Gordon Klepec, vice president of sales and marketing at Wright Business Graphics — the Portland, Ore.-based print communications company sponsoring the event.

Scudder says the conference will focus on two simple but important objectives: 1) Develop strategies to recruit, hire and retain youth, and 2) Discuss ways to remain relevant by innovating through the use of technology. It will include short keynotes, panel discussions, breakout sessions, a networking dinner in downtown Denver and more.

The target audience is owners and employees of distributors and manufacturers under the age of 50 who would like to learn ways to innovate, attract youth and incorporate new ways of thinking into their businesses.

PEAK Award Spotlight: Nokia Video Brochure

The PEAK Awards are upon us once again! The PEAK Awards recognize industry firms that innovate and help customers grow. Since 1995, the program has awarded teams that make bold decisions, connect with customers in new ways and deliver benefits to end users.

Last year, Promo Print Solutions was a Grand Award Winner in the Innovation Spotlight: Production Complexity category.

Nokia wanted an interactive vehicle to promote its new Lumia 822 cellphone. A video brochure was the solution. The brochure was placed into a display along with the phone for the consumer to review the phone hands-on and watch the video. While the brochure was powered on, it was designed to allow for the Nokia Lumia 822 logo to be viewed. The consumer then had the option to play and pause the video as it progressed.

Gill Studios Wins 5 PIA MidAmerica Awards

PSDA member Gill Studios recently was presented three Best of Category and two Awards of Excellence from Printing & Imaging Association of MidAmerica as part of the 2014 Graphic Excellence Awards Competition. The three Best of Category awards were for Digital Printing – Wide Format, Non-Paper Substrata – Finished Piece < 20 x 28, and Non-Paper Substrata – Finished Piece > 20 x 28. An Award of Excellence was presented for Finishing – Diecuts, pop-ups, unique folds and another for Point-of-Purchase & Displays (Single Piece).

The Graphic Excellence Competition recognizes the technical excellence involved with the manufacturing of a printed product. Entries ranging from corporate stationery to complex marketing pieces make up the over 500 entries in the competition. Best of Category recognition is given only to the single piece in each category in the competition.

Victor Printing Celebrates 95 Years in Business

PSDA member Victor Printing is celebrating 95 years as one of Sharon, Pa.'s most innovative printers. Since 1919, the family-owned commercial print company has provided customers with high-quality products, unsurpassed customer service and a wide variety of in-house services.

“Being able to adapt to change is essential to longevity and growth,” said Bill Richards. “That's why, in the early '80s, we became a trade-only printer.”

Victor Printing's founder, William Victor Richards, started in the printing industry in the garage of his parents' home in 1919. Today, Richards' grandsons, Bill and Terry Richards, have continued to grow and expand the business. While Victor Printing remains an expert in printing, it is also a full-service provider offering clients design, commercial and digital printing, forms manufacturing, wide-format, mailing and finishing services.

“When my grandfather founded the company, I don't think he had any inclination that, 95 years later, there would be three generations of Richards' working for the company,” said Terry Richards, owner and partner. “I've personally had the pleasure of working here for over 40 years, and very proud of the progress we've made.”

The most significant change Victor has made over the years is the expansion of their capabilities and services related to technology. Business continued to grow and so did the needs of their customers, which brought the inception of digital printing in 2000. Today, large format printing, direct mail services, and a vast array of finishing techniques are among the many technology-related services Victor provides.
Printco Approved to Produce 2014 N.J. Prescription Forms

PSDA member Printco Inc., which has been an approved vendor for New Jersey prescription forms, recently was approved for the 2014 versions of New Jersey prescription forms. In order to achieve this, the company has gone through months of testing and submitting forms to the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General. Printco started to accept orders for all formats and versions on May 1.

As of May 18, licensed health care practitioners and facilities will no longer be able to purchase the current version of New Jersey prescription forms. However, they will be able to use these forms until Aug. 18, 2014, which is the date they will be required to implement the new versions.
Formax Introduces Two New Cut-True Cutters

PSDA member Formax announces the addition of two new Cut-True guillotine cutters to its line of digital print and finishing solutions. Standard features include a high-quality hardened steel blade, LED cutting line for accuracy, user-friendly controls, an all-metal stand with storage shelf, blade changing safety tool and a variety of safety features.

The Cut-True 27A Automatic Programmable Paper Cutter offers precision cutting with intuitive controls for sheets up to 18.9” wide. The touchscreen control panel allows users to program up to 99 jobs, with up to 30 cuts each. Adjusting the back gauge is simplified by using the control panel or the electronic hand wheel. Dual-button operation engages both the automatic clamp and the hardened steel blade.

The Cut-True 27S Semi-Automatic Paper Cutter cuts through stacks up to 3.15” high, up to 18.9” wide as well. User-friendly features include electronically controlled two-hand operation and an automatic paper clamp in place of a manual hand crank.

Each of the new cutters includes the following safety features: transparent rear cover, blade lock, external blade depth adjustment, easy blade change access from the front of the cutter, and a wooden paper push for safe alignment.
