Best of Print Solutions Magazine: The Future of Variable Data Printing to 2017


All around us, we hear people talking about the opportunity offered by one-to-one (personalized) printing, also called variable data printing (VDP). But what's the real story? Can anyone put hard numbers to the market for these products? Smithers Pira, a market research firm out of the United Kingdom, has attempted to do just that. Its report, "The Future of Variable Data Printing to 2017," attempts to put hard numbers where hard numbers can be put.

The Flesh Company’s Roger Buck Inducted into Ben Franklin Honor Society

PSDA member The Flesh Company's marketing director, Roger Buck (pictured below, right), recently was inducted into the Ben Franklin Honor Society. The Ben Franklin Honor Society of Printing Industries of America recognizes and honors industry leaders who have made lasting contributions to advancing the printing and graphic communications industries. This includes, but is not limited to, Printing Industries of America and its affiliates and the Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation (PGSF). Industry visionaries who have rendered outstanding or meritorious service to those associations or the industry are eligible for membership.

Irv Michlin (IMCOM Inc.) and Ivars Sarkans (Sarkans and Assoc.) submitted Buck's name, and Michlin was present to formally introduce Buck to Willy Wilkins, BFHS Chair, and the membership. Ten other industry professionals were also inducted during the ceremonies.

“This is a real honor for me,” Buck said. “I started in a weekly newspaper shop in Girard, Kan., and worked in many of the business form plants in that area.” Buck also sits on the Advisory Board for the PSU Graphics and Imaging Technology Department.

Infinity Label Systems Launches New Website and Program

PSDA member Infinity Label Systems of Scottsdale, Ariz., recently launched its new website and a unique program that provides its distributors with free thermal transfer ribbons with every label and tag order.

“We want to partner with our distributors/resellers and provide them the most value for their businesses and their customers,” said Tom Jeffrey, president of Infinity Label Systems. By providing free thermal transfer ribbons to its distributors with their label and tag orders, Infinity believes its distributors can offer even more competitive pricing to their customers and/or increase their profit margins significantly on that portion of their business.

Infinity Label Systems new website — www.infinitylabelsystems.com — puts the company's new “Get Your Thermal Transfer Ribbons Free” program front and center. “We're putting the focus on adding value for our distributors by making them more competitive and more profitable,” Jeffrey said. Speaker of the House John Boehner Visits Repacorp

On his way to purchase a Bowman Landes free range turkey in New Carlisle, Ohio, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, John Boehner, stopped by PSDA member Repacorp to talk about how the Affordable Healthcare Act is affecting small businesses. After meeting, Boehner took a tour of Repacorp's Ohio facility and posed for a group photo.

“I met John Boehner through a great group of guys in the Troy, Ohio area,” said Rick Heinl, CEO of Repacorp. “I have played in the John Boehner Golf Outing for the last six to eight years. John likes to learn by being in the field and experiencing it. So I told him to stop by Repacorp if he was ever in the area,” Heinl said. “It was a real honor to have him here.”

MAR Graphics Increases Digital Print Capacity

PSDA member MAR Graphics recently completed the installation of a Xerox iGen4-26” and is the first to take advantage of the color precision and speed of the new Xerox Color 8250 Production Printer. Capitalizing on the growth in variable data and digital color printing, MAR upgraded its fleet of color digital print engines to two new, full-color devices.

MAR Graphics utilizes the larger 14.33” x 26” sheet size of the iGen4-26” to more efficiently serve its clients in the direct mail and commercial print markets. The iGen4-26” also features matte toner and an in-line booklet-maker. MAR Graphics uses the 8250 to quickly and cost-effectively produce transactional business documents and direct-mail pieces with spot-on color.

“We generate a high volume of direct mail and transactional statements that previously utilized a variety of highlight colors. With the 8250, we have the flexibility to reproduce any color our customers require,” said Scott Roever, vice president and comptroller of MAR Graphics. “Business color printing is a critical component of our operation. With the 8250, we can deliver color accuracy and do so competitively.”

In addition to the iGen4-26” & 8250, MAR Graphics operates multiple B/W devices, UV half-web presses, UV forms web presses, flexo and ink-jet systems, web-finishing lines, lettershop and bindery equipment.
Wright Business Graphics Expands Sales and Management Teams

PSDA member Wright Business Graphics (a subsidiary of Wright Enterprises Holding Company headquartered in Portland, Ore.) recently hired Jeff Wiencken (pictured below, left) as a sales representative for the company's Portland facility. Wiencken will be directly responsible for managing existing key client relationships as well as identifying new growth opportunities in the Northwest region.

“We are extremely excited to have someone with Jeff's industry experience join our sales team,” said Gordon Klepec, vice president of sales and marketing for Wright Enterprises. “Jeff brings an extensive background in creating and implementing dynamic, highly integrated marketing programs for a diverse group of customers. His skill set and experience lends itself perfectly to developing web-based solutions to complement our fast growing digital and commercial printing divisions.”

The company also added Brandon Olson (pictured below, right) as director of operations/lean manufacturing, a newly created position. “We are thrilled to have Brandon join our team as we continue to transform and retool our manufacturing facilities through applied lean manufacturing principals. We are looking forward to Brandon applying some of the knowledge he gained working in the aerospace industry to help us improve operational efficiencies by reducing costs, eliminating waste and improving productivity,” said Dan Adkison, president and COO. “Our goal is to foster a team environment where employee empowerment, engagement and excellence thrive.”
