PSDA's 2011 CEO Summit Under Way in New Orleans

PSDA's CEO Summit kicked off yesterday in New Orleans with the PSDA Give-Back Day and a networking reception. For the PSDA Give-Back Day, 16 volunteers sanded, hung and mudded dry wall with the St. Bernard Project. View photos from the Give-Back Day. The event continues with a full schedule today, including a "State of PSDA" presentation by Matt Sanderson, Executive Vice President, and Bill Prettyman, 2010-2011 President. PSDA Distributors to Discuss "Partnering for Profit" at Dscoop Conference

Three PSDA member distributors will participate in a panel discussion at Dscoop6, to be held Feb. 17-19 in Orlando, FL. Dscoop (Digital Solutions Cooperative) is a community of HP Graphic Arts press owners and their sales, marketing and production teams. The panel, moderated by Barb Pellow of InfoTrends, will feature John Loftis of Innovative Business Products, Rob Trube of Superior Business Solutions and Scott Lawton of Winbrook. The discussion will focus on the value of the distributor channel in today's digital printing marketplace. Stay tuned for further coverage in Print Solutions magazine and on the PSDA website.

PSDA Staff Profile: Meet Charlie Roberts

Get to know members of your association staff in selected editions of the Print Solutions e-newsletter. This week, we feature Charlie Roberts, who works in PSDA's Washington, DC, office.

What is your role on the PSDA staff team?
As a "sourcing" expert, my role with PSDA is to provide project consultation and to suggest possible vendors for any project for which a PSDA member company may need assistance. PSDA members work on projects ranging from more traditional business forms and computer paper to promotional products and direct mail. I have been asked via PSDA's Source Hotline to locate vendors for some unusual products.

As a longtime PSDA staff member, what are your thoughts on the association's future?
Print services have been trending toward shorter lead times with lower order quantities. Technology is fostering these trends by providing the means to produce less without the fixed costs associated with more traditional print methods. With this come new challenges and revised standards of operational procedures. The future of printing is a moving target, and PSDA is positioned well to assist its members in locking in on it.

What is your favorite PSDA memory or experience?
What I enjoy most about serving PSDA is being able to assist our members with their various print projects. Some of the more unusual recent projects have included locating ice cream containers, continuous file folders and a security tag that looks like a padlock. One really out-of-the-ordinary project was an order for commemorative stamps that needed pinhole perforation and luminous ink. I find adventure in the unusual requests and enjoy the challenge in locating potential vendors.

What are some "fun facts" or surprising pieces of information about you?
I enjoy fishing, and I have traveled to some out of the way places to cast my line. I have fished for marlin in the waters off of Cabo San Lucas. I have fished for trout and grayling in the high mountains of Colorado. I have plied the waters of Lake Erie for walleye. The Potomac River here in the Washington, DC, area offers some great large-mouth bass fishing.

Responsive Solutions Unveils QR Code Functionality, Publishes Related White Paper

PSDA member Responsive Solutions – developer of CUSTOMER+, a web-to-print and online marketing automation platform – recently announced the availability of a new QR code functionality as part of its Personalized Marketing Module. Responsive Solutions has integrated the creation of QR codes into the CUSTOMER+ system and created an easy-to-use workflow to automatically place unique QR codes into branded marketing documents, such as marketing fliers and business cards. Responsive Solutions also has a complimentary white paper on QR codes "QR Codes Tying it All Together," which is available for download from its website.

Broker Forms Welcomes New Business Development Manager

Gary Guttersen recently joined PSDA member Broker Forms as its business development manager. Guttersen has more than 30 years of customer service and sales management experience working at a large printing manufacturer. Guttersen says that his primary goal is to increase and strengthen the number of distributor partnerships Broker Forms has and to "make them (distributors) aware that it is as painless as possible to work with Broker Forms. Based on my past experience, seeing the ups and downs of independent brokers, I think Broker Forms makes life easier for distributors to do their jobs successfully."

FLEXcon to Purchase Graphics Division of Arlon Inc.

FLEXcon, a manufacturer of pressure-sensitive films and adhesives, recently entered an agreement to acquire the business assets of the Graphics Division of Arlon Inc., of Santa Ana, CA, to form a company to be named Arlon Graphics, LLC, a new, wholly owned subsidiary of FLEXcon. This strategic move will strengthen FLEXcon's market leadership position by expanding its product portfolio in advertising and promotional products, as well as extending its sales channel and global market presence.
