Air Travel
Cairns and Great Barrier Reef region welcomes 2.25 million visitors each year. As Australia's northern gateway, Cairns Airport is serviced by six international airlines and six domestic airlines.
International
The primary airlines servicing Cairns are Qantas Group via Jetstar brand, Cathay Pacific, Air Niugini, Air New Zealand and Continental Airlines, with direct flights to Cairns originating from:
- Japan - with connections to Asia, Europe and America
- Singapore - with connections to Asia, Europe and America
- Hong Kong - with connections to Asia, Europe and America
- New Zealand - with connections to America
- Guam - with connections to Japan and America
- Papua New Guinea - with connections to Asia
Domestic
Domestically, Cairns is serviced by all the major Australian carriers including Virgin Blue and the Qantas Group brands of Qantas and Jetstar operating services to Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Darwin, with onward connecting flights to other destinations.
Qantas and Qantaslink also serve a number of the major destinations directly from Cairns including one of the icons of Australia - Ayers Rock.
Skytrans operates services to regional areas within Queensland and there are a large number of local charter companies providing fast, regular service both to remote regional areas and to the Great Barrier Reef.
Walking
Cairns city is compact and easy to navigate, with most local facilities and attractions within easy walking distance.
Public Transport

Climate
The months between May and October is the dry season which is the ideal weather to visit Cairns. The maximum temperature during May is 29 degrees centigrade and the minimum 19 degrees centigrade.
Visa/Passport Requirements
A valid passport is required for entry into Australia. All travellers to Australia must obtain a visa or electronic travel authority (ETA) before travelling to Australia, with the exception of New Zealand citizens travelling on New Zealand passports. The Australian Visitor Visa may be obtained by mail or in person from the nearest Australian High Commission, Embassy or Consulate. In some countries, travel agents can issue the visa. Travellers may be issued with either a visa in their passport or an electronic visa, depending on the country of origin and the passport/nationality of the traveller. It is the responsibility of the delegate to ensure that they hold the required documentation before arriving in Australia.
Please note that applications for visas must be submitted at least 6 weeks prior to the date of travel. We strongly recommend making an early application for a visa.
