Designing the Next Generation Emergency Department

Emergency departments are under enormous pressure from rapidly escalating demand and constrained resources. As the primary gateway for the acutely ill and as a major provider of primary care, they deliver a broad and complex array of services under critical time pressures. We need to investigate new ways to leverage both design and technology to enable the continuing provision of sustainable, high quality care in this challenging environment.

This one - day conference takes a new approach to addressing this problem. The program will link together the clinicians and researchers who have focused on understanding the issues in modern emergency departments, with leaders in design and information technology.

Presentations on the issues and future options will be followed by facilitated design workshops focused on developing practical alternative solutions. An expert panel will then discuss outcomes of these sessions. The workshop outputs will also be modeled and shared post conference, to enable ongoing discussions amongst the delegates on the impacts of these new approaches to emergency department design.

Presenters and facilitators include:

Dr Sally McCarthy: President of the Australian College of Emergency Medicine
Prof Johanna Westbrook: Director of the Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research, University of NSW
Dr Paul Barach: Senior Research Fellow at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, Associate Professor at the University of South Florida and Chair of research at the Center for Health Design.
Dr David Hansen: CEO of CSIRO's Australian eHealth Research Centre
Dr John Zelcer: Head of Strategy, NEHTA - National E - Health Transition Authority
Dr Ian Forbes: Adjunct Professor, Health Architecture and Planning (GHAAP), University of Technology, Sydney, practicing health architect
Katerina Andronis: Director Health, Deloitte Australia
Ian Gibson: researcher in emergency department modeling and Project Director, Johnstaff Projects Pty Ltd

Join us for a day of deeply interesting discussions and the exploration of new emergency department design ideas.

This event is being held on August 1, in the Brisbane Convention Centre as part of HISA's HIC2011 conference.

We hope to see you there
