Using Transit at the GIS-LIS Conference

Want to save money on parking at this year’s conference? Well, if you live in the metro area (especially near St. Paul), you can probably ride the bus! Fares are cheaper than most parking garages, and there are over 20 routes that will drop you within a block or two of the conference. Even more routes will drop you off within walking distance downtown. Streets with transit service are marked in pink below, with the red dots marking the closest stops. You can find route numbers and orient yourself using MetroTransit’s Downtown St. Paul map.

For more information about transit, visit MetroTransit’s web site at www.metrotransit.org - and be sure to check out their Online Trip Planner! Simply enter in your address as the starting point, choose “Xcel Energy Center” as the Landmark in the destination box, and fill in the rest of your preferences. Keep in mind that the Trip Planner does not always show every option available - more information is available by phone, and new riders are encouraged to call 1-800-NEW-RIDER to get help riding the bus.

Please note that bus service is subject to change, and service cuts are anticipated. Please check back in late September for the most current information.

For those of you interested in making your own maps, a wealth of transit GIS data is available at www.datafinder.org. Before you go there, you might want to check out this overview, which explains the organization and purpose of the database.
