The Aged Care IT Special Interest Group of the Health Informatics Society of Australia
Aged Care informatics, Dr Lemai Nguyen (Deakin University) defines aged care informatics as a specialised branch of Health informatics that is the intersection of not only healthcare, information sciences, computer science, but also aged care research. Aged care research (also referred to as gerontic nursing research) studies a range of care services for the aged and develops knowledge of ageing and nursing of the aged.
Mission and core values
To promote the adoption of ICT, assistive technology and information management in ageing and aged care. We do this through:
- Promoting quality research demonstrating the benefits for consumers, families, carers, provider organisations, funders, government and the community
- Informing policy, strategy and resource deployment
- Supporting the introduction of new technologies and new models of care.
- Encouraging collaboration and research to demonstrate and evaluate the social, clinical and economic benefits of health informatics in aged care
Direction for this group and industry
- Work with government, provide advocacy for members and influence policy development
- Bring together academics, practitioners, care providers, care recipients, and carers with an interest in aged care informatics to update information, exchange and share expertise, and experiences
- Represent and support intercommunication of all members needs from a variety of regions, professions and stakeholders in aged care market
- Develop an aligned vision of both IT vendor & Aged Care Industry
- Share evidence about the best practice and other potential approaches for the implementation of technological which facilitate improved information and communications across all aged care settings
- Source and disseminate research evidence about what works and how it works in introducing IT solutions into health and aged care
- Create a forum to assist members in developing collaborations and conducting collaborative research/practical projects that is of high quality and relevant to improving advancing aged care informatics research as well as practice
- Inform broader community on the uses of ICT in improving the quality of life for older Australians, their families and their caregivers
- Broadly identify and evaluate opportunities and conditions prevalent in the aged care sector that would benefit from the application of health informatics
- To develop a framework to support the identification, evaluation and implementation of models of care and related technologies which improve outcomes in the aged care sector through the quality of care and other outcomes
