About The
Conference
The Minnesota GIS/LIS Consortium will hold its 12th Annual Conference and Workshops on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Land Information Systems (LIS) on October 2-4, 2002, at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (DECC). The pre-conference workshops offered on Wednesday, October 2, will cover a variety of technical topics through lectures, discussions, field trips and hands-on training, and will be followed by a Welcome Reception in the evening. The conference opens Thursday, October 3, with a Plenary Session, followed by Concurrent Sessions throughout the day and the Vendors Reception and Poster Gallery in the evening. Concurrent Sessions will continue on Friday, October 4, to be followed by the Closing Luncheon. The Exhibit Hall will be open both Thursday and Friday, and will feature over 40 vendors exhibit-ing the latest in GIS-related technology and services.
Who Should Attend?
The conference program is designed to address the needs of:
- Municipal, County, State and Federal government officials who implement and use GIS/LIS for a variety of applications.
- Surveyors, engineers and land management specialists who use GIS/LIS technology.
- Business, real estate, banking and insurance specialists who need to understand and access GIS/LIS data.
- University faculty and students interested in new GIS/LIS technology and research applications.
- Public and private utility representatives who use GIS/LIS technology for infrastructure management.
- Consultants who provide GIS/LIS services or hardware/software.
- Individuals interested in learning more about GIS/LIS in Minnesota.
Conference Highlights
On Wednesday, a variety of full and half-day Workshops will address topics ranging from general and introductory GIS/LIS concepts to more technical areas of GIS/LIS applications and research. A complete listing of workshops is listed here.
A Welcome Reception will be held on Wednesday evening onboard the Vista Star. The boat will load from the dock at the DECC at 5:00 p.m. Click here for more information and to register for this event.
The Concurrent Sessions, Project Demonstrations and Poster Presentations will address numerous subjects of interest to GIS/LIS practitioners in local government, natural resources management, transportation or business. Click on each of the following for a complete listing of sessions, project demonstrations and posters. Posters will be available for viewing in the Exhibit Hall with authors present during the Vendors Reception and Poster Gallery.
The Exhibit Hall will feature numerous vendors showcasing the latest GIS-related hardware, software, products and services, and will be open Thursday and Friday.
The Vendors Reception and Poster Gallery, held on Thursday evening, will be held in the Exhibit Hall with all vendors present. The reception will feature complimentary hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar. Door prizes will be given away at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m.
Outstanding Keynote Speakers!
On Thursday, October 3, the Opening Plenary Session will be given by:
- John Monson, USDA-Farm Service Agency - Promoting Partnerships to Improve Homeland Security
- Paul Olson, DNR, State of Minnesota - Mapping Ground Zero: Partnerships in Action
John Monson of the USDA Farm Service Agency will team up with Paul Olson of the Minnesota DNR in a concerted effort to discuss the value of multi-agency partnerships and show how such collaboration benefits us in handling Homeland Security issues. This is a great opportunity to experience what it was like to be on the mapping crew at Ground Zero. After the September 11th collapse of the World Trade Center in New York City, search and rescue workers from many different agencies across the country were called to help. The Minnesota DNR, Chippewa and Superior National Forests sent about 12 people to New York to assist the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Urban Search and Rescue teams. This presentation is a very personal photo journal of Paul Olson's two weeks in New York working with the FEMA search and rescue teams.
Friday Lunch Speaker
On Friday, October 4, the Closing Luncheon speaker will be:
- Ron Onderjka, National Security Imagery Expert - From Hilltop to Hyperspectral
The closing session will discuss imaging and measuring the earth from above. With the perspective of more than 40 years of developing and applying airborne and space remote sensing systems primarily for surveying and mapping, Ron will offer a brief look at how we saw and currently see and record our terrestrial surroundings and nearby planetary neighbors.
Reflections on 16th-century hilltop surveying and terrain depiction, and the similarity to today's 3-D flyovers, bracket the techniques and accomplishments of sensing for military, civil and exploration applications. Tomorrow's images may even "tell us" what the recorded objects are made of via hyperspectral detection.

About the Minnesota GIS/LIS Consortium
The Minnesota GIS/LIS Consortium is a forum for communicating information to and improving cooperation among those interested in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Land Information Systems (LIS) in the state of Minnesota. Members include GIS users in local, state and federal government agencies; business and industry; and educational institutions. Membership is free.
The Consortium hosts annual statewide conferences and establishes committees that deal with specific
GIS/LIS-related issues in Minnesota. Opportunities to participate in Consortium activities are available through volunteer work with committees, conferences and workshops.
